Machinery parade marks peak of construction

The Upper Waitaki Power Development, the largest project in New Zealand and one of the most ambitious in the world, is to hold a parade this Saturday around the construction town of Twizel.

Earthworks on the project have now reached their peak — with nearly two-thirds completed so private contractors s and the Ministry of Warks and Development arranged the parade to mark the occasion.

Nearly 200 heavy rubber tyred machines will be displayed out of a total of some 350 plant items used in the construction of the dams, canals and pow-

erhouses which characterise the scheme. The collection of earthmoving machines is so big that overseas experts have estimated the project as having the biggest collection in the world.

Large numbers of machines will be leaving the MacKenzie Basin now that most of the heavy work has been finished. One of the machines used for instance is the Caterpillar 992 loader which carries 15 tons in one mouthful with, its 10 cubic yard bucket.

The range of vehicles to be seen in the display include scrapers, dump trucks, dozers, loaders, watercarts, agitator trucks and mobile cranes.
