Swimmer shines
Kara Taumaunu (Wharenui) failed by O.lsec to make a clean sweep of the boys 13 years agegroup at the Canterbury swimming championships when he finished second in the last event, the 400 m freestyle, at Queen Elizabeth II Park last evening. Taumaunu swam in a faster section than the winner. Stephen i Grenfell (Wharenui). Grenfell’s ; time of 4min 45.35ec was just [O.lsec faster than Taumaunu's. ; Paul Rowe (Wharenuß easily I won the men’s 400 m freestyle ;but the time was relatively slow at 4min 17.5 sec. Grant Forbes (Pegasus' won his first swim in an individual event at the championships in the junior boys’ 400 m freestyle. He returned on Tuesday from a week of competition in Australia. Melanie Jones (Wharenui) had a comfortable win in the senior women’s 400 m freestyle and Rickie Binning (Wharenui) won the junior girls' title with similar ease. Kim Dewar (Wharenui) won her eighth title in the girls’ 13 years section by winning the 400 m freestyle.
