‘Whisky plane’ skid

NZPA Stansted Stansted Airport in Essex, which has been used as an alternative for international flights affected by weather and strikes, was closed early yesterday after a Uganda Airlines Boeing 707 used for President Amin’s so-called whisky run, had slid off the runway on landing. The 11 persons on board escaped unhurt but the aircraft is stuck on soft ground by the side of the runway.

Six hundred people due to fly out have had their trips delayed. An airport spokesman said, “It will not be until the morning at least before we can start to shift it. We have to bring lifting equioment from Heathrow.”

It was expected that the airport would be closed until late last evening. The snokesman said the poor weather caused the aircraft to skid.
