Canty trailing
The New Zealand under-23 women's cricket team was in a reasonably strong position after the first day of its match against a Canterbury XI at Porritt Park yesterday.
The national side, having won the toss, had been under pressure earlier in the day and was restricted to 82 in its first innings. Canterbury began well when Ann McKenna and Karen Perry combined in a first-wicket, partnership of 46 but once they were separated there was a steady decline and Canterbury reached only 91. After losing two quick wickets in its second in-
nings, New Zealand under-23 fought back strongly, with its captain, Jan Hall, being unbeaten on 69 at stumps. New Zealand has an over-all advantage of 98 runs with six wickets remaining. Canterbury will need a quick breakthrough when the game concludes today. Scores:— New Zealand under-23 82 <S. Storey 13, G. Tipa 19, N. Turner 11, 1. Jagersma 17; N. Williams 3/17. D. Costello 2/11, M. Lux more 2/12) and 107/4 (J. Hall 69 not out, Tipa 14, Jagersma 11 not out; S. Gardyne 2/11) met Canterbury XI 91 (A. McKenna 39, K. Hadlee 16, K. Perrv 10; N. Turner 3/25, K. Brown 5/17).
