Watersiders to work over week-end

Lyttelton watersiders have agreed to handle the American vessel Schyler Otis Bland over the week-end

The general-purpose Antarctic supplies carrier is set to arrive at 7 p.in. on Saturday, after delays caused by engine trouble on the voyage from San Diego. Monday is the watersiders’ annual picnic day. but the ship will be worked continuously with the aim of finishing by 11 p.m. on Monday. The rush will allow the Otis Bland to make a passage through the ice to discharge her cargo.

The reported scrapping of the P and O cruise liner Arcadia will probable not cause any curtailment of the company's cruises. The Arcadia will be replaced on the Australian scene by the Kungsholm.

The Kungsholm was built on the Clyde bv John Brown in 1966 for the Swedish America Line,

and at 27,000 tonnes it bears a resemblance to the P and O flagship Canberra. As part of her refit when P and O took her over the forward funnel of two was removed for an observation deck. The Kungsholm was bought from the Bermuda-based company Flagship Cruises, which is owned by Oivind Loretzen of Sweden, who used the vessel for short Caribbean cruises. P and O is optimistic about the future of cruising. The chairman of P and O Cruises (Mr Harry Spanton) said that cruising had shown substantially improved profits. “Some areas of world shipping are under stress at present,” he said, “but the acquisition of the Kungsholm demonstrates the potential In such specialised trades as cruising.” ® ® « ARRIVALS Coastal Trader (7 a. tn.!, 2500, Dunedin, Capt.
