Nicaraguans dead 'in thousands’
PA Wellington Since the insurrection in Nicaragua in September, 1978, reports have been received of more than 1000 arrests and 5000 deaths, says a statement from the human rights organisation, Amnesty International. The statement said that Ciro Molina, aged 30, one of Nicarugua's leading
writers, was one of 500 cal reasons during the uppeople arrested for politrising.
Mr Molina, who has been confined to a wheelchair all his life, was being held without charge by the National Security Guard and needed urgent medical attention, the statement said.
Renaldo Cruz Menjivar, a peasant organiser for the Christian Democratic Party in Nicaragua, was arrested in December, 1977. He escaped last September after his weight dropped to 31.5 kg and was granted asylum by the Venezuelan Embassy in San Salvador.
He was tortured after his arrest and held in manacles in a filthy cell so small he was unable to stand erect, the statement said. Amnesty International has made an urgent appeal for the release of all political prisoners held in detention in El Salvador.
