Apples will be cheaper
Apples which will go on sale in the next few days will be “significantly cheaper” than they were last year.
The marketing manager for the Apple and Pear Board (Mr P. M. Turner) said yesterday that the cheaper prices of earlyseason apples were a direct result of the board’s hew policy to market fruit at prices that were more competitive with gate sellers. The first main varieties to be released will be about 35 per cent cheaper than they were last year. ‘‘For example, the housewife will be able to go to her supermarket or greengrocer and buy Gravensteins from 29c to 42c a kilogram this year, depending on size and grade, compared with 44c to 65c per kilogram last year,” Mr Turner said.
