Seabird 'becalmed'

While yesterday’s heat caused many people to head for the sea, one unfortunate creature was stranded on the land. It was an injured Giant Petrel, found at the Estuary by Mary Morrison, of Sumner. She got in touch with the Christchurch City ranger, Mr J. Baggstron, who examined the bird and found it to have a damaged foot. Giant Petrels, also known as “Stinkpots” and “Neliys,” need run-ups to take off, so the bird found itself “becalmed” on the beach.

Mr Baggstron took it home to nurse its injury.
