150 enter 20-mile run

John Argue (Olympic), the winner of the Christchurch to Rangiora 20-mile road race the last two seasons, is not expected to try for the “hat trick” on Wednesday evening.

Argue has only recently returned to training after a spell off with an ankle injury. He won the 1976 race in 1:47.49 and in December 1977 won again in 1:46.36. The race is expected to attract a field of more than 150. Keen competition is

likely among the top group of runners because the race is one of seven in the Canterbury Road Runners’ Association points competition. Argue's club-mate, J. K. MacDonald, is leading the competition with 29 points after four races. Next is Gary Clarke (Olympic), Brent Cowie (University), Wayne Rouse (St Martins) and Brendan Daly (Rovers); Frank Nolan (University), and Stu Hill (Technical).

Clarke is a doubtful startier, but all are capable of

being, prominent in the running.

Others who could win the race or come close if they start are Gavin Donaldson (Christchurch), Dave Rowell (University), Merv Austin (St Martins), Kevin Barnes (Christchurch), and Colin Hicks (Toe H). The men’s race starts in Caledonian Road, Christchurch, at. 6 p.m. Women runners will set off at 5.30 p.m. A reception and prizegiving will follow at Rangiora.
