'Suitable' rail service sought
Greymouth reporter “All we want is that the present rail passenger services between Canterbury and the West Coast be retained pending discussions on one that will be more suitable to all the people of the Coast,” said the secretary of the Greymouth branch of the National Union of Railwaymen (Mr T. J. Isherwood) on Saturday. Mr Isherwood said that rather than attracting customers, the new timetable due to start on February 5 would have the opposite effect,
because of the early departure and late arrival, and lack of suitable feeder services. “It is an excellent service for residents of Greymouth and the immediate area, but other people on the Coast also count, and they have too often in the past lost rail passenger services. “We will agree if the department comes up with something which is suitable to the majority of people in Westland, but we feel tht this particular proposal is entirely unsatisfactory,” Mr Isherwood said.
