Newton beaten in tennis final

PA Auckland Christine Newton, the Canterbury and New Zealand Federation Cup player, found Dorte Ekner the Danish Cup No. 1, too good at the serve and volley game to lose the final of the North Shore women’s singles 4-6, 6-4, 4-6. at Auckland.

Service breaks came regularly but it was the more consistent volleying of the Dane which gave her the advantage in the third set.

■ Miss Newton suffered a recurrence of elbow trouble but blamed the hard matches leading to the final for her lack of sharpness.
