Eddery in form

NZPA-Reuter Hong Kong The irish jockey, Pat Eddery, won the Hong Kong Gold Cup to become champion in a jockeys’ invitation series that attracted top riders from seven countries. Eddery, who won the Invitation Plate against some , of the world’s best jockeys, did the trick again in the Cup aboard Observatory — and rubbed in his supremacy with two more wins at the Shatin track. The cup victory was gained with great panache as the whip-wielding Eddery hurtled-up just on the line to beat hot favourite, Top Gain, ridden by Hong Kong's champion apprentice, Sam!son Lau. A Frenchman, Jean Cruguet, famous for his association with the American triple crown winner, Seattle Flew, filled the third berth , while the distinguished cast of also-rans included Lester Piggott, the British - titleholder Willy Carson, the 1977 French champion Philippe Paquet, and Sydney’s top jockey, Malcom Johnston.
