Helicopter hunters restricted
Helicopter hunters in certain areas of Canterbury will not be allowed to shoot red deer on Crown land from January 29. Only live deer will be allowed to be taken by helicopter because of the increased value of deer and the interest in farming them. Permits issued to helicopter hunters for the Lake Sumner Forest Park, Grantham State Forest 1, Arthur’s Pass National Park within the Canterbury conservancy and the unclassified Crown land in the headwaters of the Rakaia River, will be included in the new regulation.
No helicopter hunting will be permitted, including the taking of live deer, this year from April 1 to April 30, from November 9 to 11, and from December 10 this year to January 27, 1980.
The Forest Service said the Kaikoura area would not be subject to the excluded periods. It emphasised that the killing restriction applied only to helicopters working on land for which Forest Service permits were issued and would not apply to occupied runland. All other wild animals, such as thar, chamois, wild goats and pigs may be taken either dead or alive.
