Israel hits guerrilla bases in Lebanon
NZPA-Reuter Tel Aviv Israeli 1 paratroopers and infantry backed by artillery attacked two Palestinian bases in south Lebanon early yesterday. A military spokesman said the raiding force had moved into Lebanon across territory controlled by right-wing Christian militias. The raiders had completely surprised Palestinian guerrillas in their bases at Arnoun and Asyaya. both north of the River Litani. The Israelis had returned safely, with only one soldier slightly injured. The raid was apparently in retaliation for Palestinian attacks in Israel in the last week. It was the first time Israeli ground forces had struck into Lebanon since Israel’s full-scale invasion of southern Lebanon last March to wipe out Palestinian bases. United Nations forces later took over most of the areas subsequently evacuated by Israel but Israeli-
backed Christian forces re-i main in control of zones close to the border. The attack came as United! Nations Security Council) members were unable to! reach agreement on a resolution extending the life of the United Nations interim force' in South Lebanon, whose, mandate runs out today. Palestinian attacks inside] Israel in the last week have! included a bomb blast on
i Thursday which injured 21 persons in a Jerusalem market place and last Saturday s .vain attempt by three (guerrillas to seize hostages jin the Israeli border town of Maalot. ) The Israeli spokesman 'said that the raiding force had battled with the Palestinians in a built-up area at ■ Aichaiye, which lies about 116 km north of the Israeli border.
