Less for power in South Island
South Island industries may soon be paying 25 per cent less for power than their North Island counterparts, in a Government' move to boost regional development in the south. The Minister of Regional Development (Mr Cooper) said last evening that a reduction of possibly 25 per cent for industrial users was part of the proposal being considered to compensate South Island
industrial consumers for lack of access to cheap natural gas. “If we have the hydro resources in the South Island we should encourage developments closer to the source of this power,” Mr Cooper said. He emphasised that the policy considerations were related inritially Jto the industrial sectot Oily and no across-the-board application of the subsidy was being considered- ■ s at present.
