New ‘Elsie' to draw bonus bonds
PA Dunedin An expensive new machine to draw the winning Post Office bonus bonds numbers is being installed at the Dunedin Post Office. Called “Elsie No. 2,” the machine is a sophisticated random-number selector which will work 40 times faster than the old machine — affectionately known as “Elsie.” The new machine can do in three-quarters of an hour what the old model took five and a half days to do and was designed and built by Mr Brian Smellie, a Wellington Post Office engineer. “Elsie No. 2” arrived in Dunedin in pieces on the back of a truck. It has been assembled at Dunedin’s Chief Post Office. A series of tests to make sure the selection process is entirely random will be carried out before “Elsie No. 2” is commissioned. The Post Office will retire the original “Elsie,” after nine years service, because of increased bonus bond sales.
