Slump in sales on final day at Hamilton
PA Hamilton The stock of Namnan, which attracted such widespread attention during the opening session, were again the centre of interest at the third session of the Waikato Thoroughbred Yearling Sales in Hamilton yesterday. The three-day sale conducted by Wrightson Bloodstock concluded on a very quiet note. Yesterday’s offerings were not selected as the yearlings had been for the first two days of the sale, a notable consequence being the much smaller number of buyers. The most disappointing feature of the final day, however, was the large number of passings — 38, nearly one-third of the catalogue. A colt by Namnan from Runny Slipper, by Runnymede, fetched the top price of $9500, going to Mr I. D. Pavlovich, of Auckland. Like most of the stock of Namnan, the top-priced lot was offered on account of the Fleurs Stud, Cambridge, where Namnan stands. Second-top price was
$8250, which Mr F. Greenville, of Morrinsville, outlaid for the grey filly by Namnan from French Rose. Mr Greenville was also the buyer of a Namnan — Mon Coeur (by Lionhearted) chestnut filly, for which he paid $4500. Another of the Namnans, a grey colt from the Laquis mare Moist, fetched $5OOO. Other notable sales were $6700 for a grey filly by Super Gray from Amber Countess, by Knight’s Romance; $6OOO for a bay colt by Showoff II from Gold Eclat, by Gold Sovereign; and $5OOO for a grey colt by Bellissimo, from the As Before mare, Mithrill. A grey colt by Namnan from another Runnymede mare. Code of Life, was passd in at $9500 and the Fleurs Stud were also vendors of a Namnan — Penny Whistle colt passed in at $7OOO. This colt is a younger brother of the outstanding Takanini two-year-old filly, Miss Whistle.
Altogether 117 yearlings were offered yesterday, of
which 79 sold for a total of $176,050. The average price was $2228, a considerable drop on the $4OOO-plus average prices of the first two days. Sales of $3OOO and above were: —
