Tough test for Waralene in Stakes tomorrow night

Racing and trotting / 1 |

Bv

W. R. CARSTON

Waralene, which has earned high ranking among Canterbury s four-year-olds this season, should take beating in the Frans Tours Stakes at Addington Raceway tomorrow night.

Mr Dave Condick’s talented Waratah gelding will be going for his seventh victory in the first leg of the New Zealand Metropolitan Trot-i ting Club’s T.A.B. double. For all his good form — his latest victory was an impressive affair in the Rangiora Cup about mid-way through last month — this will probably be Waralene’s toughest test. He should be capable of coping with Allspice and Captain Clive, with which he shares the 10m mark, and could possibly prove more than a match, too, for Tribunal, the lone runner off the front. But he will probably get plenty of opposition from a talented band on 20m.

This group includes Locarno and Single Lord which, like Waralene, have both won six races this season, Columnist, which will be trying to keep a last-start winning record moving, and Uncle Andrew, which suffered his first defeat in his last I five starts when fifth in the! race won by Columnist at I Addington on January 2. Motu Prince might not have much of a following on the strength of his latest form but the very capable Main Star, after two races in a fresh campaign, could give the others plenty to do if he came up with a peak run.

From 30m Lord Module’s task looks pretty formidable but if he does everything right at the start and the pace up front is not too strong he, too, could be heavily involved in the finish.

The issue in the second leg, the Mount Cook Airlines Handicap, could be between Marsha Donna, Game Pointer and Relinquish.

i vvvjrws 8.45 p.m.— TRANS TOURS STAKES $7000; four-year-olds; 2600 m. 1 6203 TRIBUNAL (1) It (4 g Lumber Dream—Bonny Aire). Usual honest effort at Washdyke last Friday. One which always has to be considered. M. de Filippi 3 1211 WARALENE (1) 10 (4 g Waratah—Thuriene). Has struck a purple patch of form in the last month or so and sure to be one of the hardest to beat. S. Little 4 0160 ALLSPICE (2) 10 (4 g Estes Minbar — Allakasam). Very good at his best but does not run them all alike. Could surprise but others preferred. F. Newfield 5 9200 CAPTAIN CLIVE (3) 10 (4 h Card Shark—Piracy). An. other inclined to mix his form a bit but very useful on his day. T. Thompson; 6 80 MAIN STAR (1) 20 (4 h Bachelor Hanover — Adio Star). Has shown nothing in two starts this time up but well above average and sharp improvement can be expected at short notice. R. Cameron I 7 1221 LOCARNO (2) 20 (4 h I Local Light—B ravine). Is taking high ranking among those in his own age group and sure to be one to add a lot of interest to the finish. R. Butt 8 6090 MOTU PRINCE (3) 20 (4 h Armbro Del—Cirrus). Showed a lot of promise earlier but taking time to find anything like his peak form this time out. N Flaws 9 8021 COLUMNIST (4) 20 (4 h Armbro Del—Coo Doo). Has the ability and the record to place him among the stronger chances. J. Smolensk! 10 1115 UNCLE ANDREW (5) 20 (4 h True Averil—Desert Song). Has been in great form recently and his laststart failure on this course on January 2 might best be disregarded. B. Hamilton II 2215 SINGLE LORD (6) 20 (4 h Lordship—Single Girl). Has run up a great record this season and can never be left out of calculations. B. Hill

12 3361 LORD MODULE (1) 30 (4 h Lordship—Module). Set tough task from this mark but is brilliant at best and will make his presence felt if there is any loitering up front. C. Devine Scratched: Flora Dor. 935 p.m.— MOUNT COOK AIRLINES HANDICAP $3250: C 4 trotters; 2600 m. 1 0000 BANKSTOWN (1) It (11 g Aksarben—Gold Donette). Would have to improve out of sight on anything he has done lately to be rated any chance. K. Greaney 2 2871 EXCALIBUR (2) It (11 g Court Martial — Scottish Linda). Came up with peak run to win at Ashburton on Boxing Day. Seldom runs a bad race and should beat more home than beat him. W. Hart 3 9000 WEE LAUREL (3) It (7 m Rodney Day—Laurelye). Won on her home course in October but record all round not very impressive. 4 2510 RELINQUISH (4) It (6 g Lordship — Villa Caprena). Although he failed last time out looks to be a bit above average. Looks the pick of

those off the front in this field.

D. Nyhan 5 0854 FABIAN (5) It (5 g Game Pride — Polydorus). Battling fourth on slushy track at Greymouth last time out has been best effort in recent starts. C. Middleton 6 8304 DEL MARIA (6) It (Nevele Gourmet—Del Reno). Keeps on turning in the odd useful effort but has found success elusive for some months now. J. Mitchell 7 27 MARSHA DONNA (1) 10 (8 m Tuft—Double Dale). Bold run fresh-up for season when second behind Excalibur at Ashburton Boxing Day but lost chance by breaking at Addington on January 2. Chance here if she does everything right. T. McMillan 8 0820 SONG GALA (2) 10 (8 m Tuft—Gala Song). Only worthwhile recent effort was second at Addington January 2. Others preferred. T. Thomas 9 90 COLIM (3) 10 (S g Van Hanover—Lady Turnabout). Has shown nothing two starts i this time up. Hard to fancy much. ’lO 0269 HANO DIRECT (4) W (4 xn Truant Hanover —Indirect). Struck solid patch of form early in season but some of recent efforts not up to same standard. Capable but would have, to be taken on trust. K. Townlev 11 0000 MISS CASTLETON (5) 10 (5 m Game Pride—Castleton’s Queen). Would have to improve out of sight on anything she has done lately to be a major threat. W. Butt 12 0868 ATARAU LAD (6) 10 (7 h Rodney Day—Stormy McCoy). Nothing about his latest efforts suggest a win in close at hand. J. McDonald 13 1686 GAME POINTER (1) 20 (5 g Game Pride—Scotch Melody). Has much ability but not too reliable off the mark. Even from this mark would be good chance, if he did everything right. J. Carmichael 14 3417 BRENDA BELL (2) 20 (10 m Goodland—Why Hurry). Caoped off useful place form with a win at Addington on January 2 but outclassed in top field at .Washdyke last Friday. Should find this a bit easier. W. Rouse
