Forest work stops

Work has stopped in the Eyrewell and Omihi State forests because of fire risk. The danger measures 9.4 points and 7.1 points respectively on a scale of 10. However, the fire risk at all other Canterbury forests is moderate. Fires must not be lit, except in approved fireplaces, and even then extreme caution must be

taken in north-westerly conditions, said a Forest Service spokesman. The Weather Office said yesterday that although cooler weather and a south - westerly wind change were forecast for the next few days, this would not decrease the fire risk. The last week had been marked by north and north-westerly winds, and high temperatures or low humidity.
