Snowstorm hits U.S.
NZPA Chicago Thousands of Chicago commuters were hindered by record cold weather and a sporadic mass-transit system on Monday, as the city struggled for a third day with the second-worst blizzard in its history. The temperature fell to —l9deg F (about —3odeg C). Snow battered much of the mid-west during the week-end, and the Governors of Illinois, Kansas,.
and lowa declared states ot emergency. The storm has caused at least 29 deaths. O’Hare International Airport, one of the world’s busiest, reopened one of its seven runways yesterday. The airport had closed on Saturday for only the fifth time in its history. The storm struck on Friday night, continued until early Sunday,and put more than half a metre of snow on the city.
