New smelter for Comalco in 1982
Comalco, Ltd, has been successful in obtaining participants in a proposed aluminium smelter to be built near Gladstone, Queensland. The two-potline smelter, to which commitment in principle has now been made, will have designed capacity of at least 180,000 tonnes a year and depending upon a number of factors, this could be increased. Comalco’s board has committed to participate in that smelter to the extent of 30 per cent, and Kaiser Aluminium and Chemical Corporaion, of the U.S.A., has expressed its intent to participate to the extent of 20 per cent.
