The Beagle Channel dispute

Sir, — Having spent some considerable time in South America and last summer traversed Sierra del Fuego, sailed around Cape Horn and the disputed islands of Picton, Lenox and Nueva and through the Beagle Channel, I found the recent article from the “Economist,” London, most interesting. However, I must point out that these islands under dispute are not “in” the Beagle Channel; admittedly, Picton is near the Atlantic entrance to the Beagle Channel, but Lenox is south and Nueva south-west of the waterway. It is only since the extension of fishing zones that Argentina has expressed concern, as a 200 mile extension from Nueva. the most easterly of the Chilean islands, would give Chile fishing, and possibly other rights, in what have always been recognised as Argentinian territorial waters. — Yours, etc., JOHN J. FORSTER. January 14, 1979.
