Asian conflict ‘concerns N.Z.’

PA Wellington The Minister of Foreign affairs (Mr Taiboys) has called for work to begin on a peaceful settlement to the conflict in IndoChina.

Mr Taiboys, after the overthrow of the Pol Pot Government in Cambodia, said he hoped the United Nations Security Council would bring the parties together and help them to work towards peace.

“New Zealand is concerned about developments in Indo-China,” he said. “We have felt that the conflict between Cambodia and Vietnam threatens to involve the great Powers in the affairs of SouthEast Asia, and to jeopardise the progress being made by countries in that area.”

Mr Taiboys said the fall of Phnom Penh and the overthrow of the Pol Pot Government increased this danger. “There is an urgent need to solve the problem and begin working towards a peaceful settlement.” Such a settlement, he said, must be based on the fact that there were three countries in Indo-China which had to live closely together.

“There can be no stability unless the independence of Cambodia is assured an<‘ unless Cambodia is prepared to cooperate with its neighbours,” Mr Taiboys said.

“We are glad that the problem has been raised with the United Nations Security Council,” he said.
