Motorists chase car in accident

Civilian drivers chased and cornered a car which was allegedly involved in a collision with a cyclist in Brougham Street last evening. The cyclist, Richard Ernest Thomas, aged 69, of Coronation Street, Spreydon, is still in the intensivecare unit of the Christchurch Hospital, with severe bead injuries. He was carried 15m on the bonnet of the car before falling off on to the road, witnesses said. Several other motorists saw the accident, which

occurred at the intersection of Brougham Street and Selwyn Street, just after 5 p.m. Two car drivers had chased the car involved, and had forced it to the side of the road, said a Ministry of Transport spokesman. He said that the driver of the car had been given a breath-test, but declined to comment further. Mr Thomas was on the seriously-ill list last evening. No-one else is sought in connection with the accident.
