Stage set for tense croquet finale
The stage is set for a dramatic finish to the croquet international between Great Britain and New Zealand, at Westport, with one game to decide the final match and the second test. Britain won the first test against Australia, in Christchurch last week, and now a 20-year-old New Zealander, Joseph Hogan, stands between it and a second test victory. The teams are playing for the Macßobertson Shield, last won by New Zealand in 1952, the last time the national side beat Britain.
Rain interrupted play yesterday and the all-import-ant singles match between Hogan and Britain’s Professor B. G. Neal.
Earlier yesterday, the New Zealand team captain, J. G. Prince, was beaten by D. K. Openshaw, 26-14, 26-0, and Paul Skinley (N.Z.) went down to William de Prichard 26-14, 26-4, tying the three-day-old test four-all with the one match to go. Hogan lost his first game with Neal 26-16, but then bounced back with a courageous 26-22 win in their second encounter. The testdeciding third game will be played today.
