No surprises in S.I. tennis
PA Blenheim With two games still in progress when rain stopped play early yesterday afternoon there had been no upsets in the men’s singles of the South Island lawn tennis championships at Blenheim. All the finals will be played on Sunday, which will still give players plenty of time to reach the Whangarei tournament beginning on Wednesday. Of the completed games, the No. 3 seed, Stuart Keller (U.S.) beat Mark Moyle (U.S.) 6-1, 6-0. Three of the remainder went to Australians: Ash Hogan beat Simon Norman (Wellington), 6-0, 6-3; the No. 2 seed Paul Russell, beat lan Chapman (Australia), 6-2, 6-1; and Glen Busby, the defending ‘title-holder, and top seed.
beat David Patterson (Wellington), 7-6, 6-7, 6-2. Two New Zealanders got through. Craig Workman (Nelson) beating lan McDonald (U.S.) 7-6, 5-7, 6-1, and the No. 6 seed, Mark Lewis (Auckland), beating the No. 7 seed, Gary Sugden (Australia), 6-4, 7-5.
The last eight have been found in the women’s singles.
Cathy Goodman (Australia) beat the No. 8 seed, Carolyn Oakley (Canterbury), 6-4, 6-1, and the sixth seed, Pam Haw, lost to fellow Australian, Brenda Cotton, 2-6, 2-6.
In other matches Cathy Lewis (U.S.) beat Lyn Cowie (Canterbury), 6-2, 6-3, and the No. 5 seed, Bronwyn Corson (Auckland) beat Nicky Robinson (Canterbury) 6-1. 6-3.
