Five draught horses thundered down the Richmond Raceway, near Nelson, as part of the Nelson Picnic Racing Club’s New Year meeting. The three place-getters in the Publican’s Derby, galloping in line ahead, are the winner, Don Thomas on Bonita, Elston Blain on Annabelle, and Brian Counihan on Justin. Mr Blair, the Motueka publican (below), appears a little perplexed over the apparent disappearance of his mount’s head during mounting-up time for the derby. The race between the draught horses was one of 16 races in the annual two-
day event, organised by members of the Nelson Trotting and Racing clubs, calling themselves the Picnic Racing Club. About 3000 people attended the first day of the meeting on Saturday. The second day was held on Monday. Bets were allowed on an equalisator. The draught horses raced over a 600 m course. They were supplied by Messrs R. J. and F. O’Connor, who run a draught horse stud farm in Appleby. Trotters and gallopers were also raced at the meeting and there were side shows, merry-go-rounds, and pony races.
