‘Get-out’ advice

PA Wellington New Zealanders have been advised to leave troubled Iran if they have no urgent business there, according to a Foreign Affairs spokesman. The advice was issued by the New Zealand Embassy in Teheran, said an assistant secretary of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Mr B.'M. Brown, yesterday. Mr Brown, formerly New Zealand Ambassador in

Teheran, said that 100 New Zealanders were still in Iran, most of them contracted to firms working in Teheran. He said that fewer than 20 New Zealanders were outside the city. Most New Zealand tourists had already left, he said. The Ministry was keeping in touch with the embassy and advising the Minister of Foreign Affairs (Mr Taiboys). Evacuation

was not necessary, he said. Civil airlines were still flying and he had been advised that they were planning extra flights. Mr Brown said the chances were very good that New Zealanders would be able to travel on civil flights if they had to leave. Reuter reports that Canada has ordered military planes to bring 300 Canadians from the northern Iranian city of Rasht, near the Caspian Sea.
