Unemployment rise
The number of registered unemployed in Christchurch increased by 335 in the fortnight to December 15, bringing the total number of registered unployed in the district to 3675. This is the highest figure since October 13, when there were 3684 unemployed, but 800 fewer than the record number of 4476 at July 28. The district superintendent of the Labour Department (Mr W. T. Holland) said that the latest figure included 292 schoolleavers.
Eraployers notified 830 vacancies to the department in the fortnight and the department found jobs for 831, of which 452 were in the private sector. The number employed on temporary programmes in the private and public sectors in Christchurch is 2307, while there are 1238 employed under first-job, additional-job, skillpromotion, and farmemployment schemes. Another 1305 students have been registered under the students community ser- : vice programme. The department has found jobs for 1038 of them.
