The Selznick years
In this special programme Hollywood pays a tribute to one of the screen’s towering figures—David O. Selznick. This showman and innovator has provided Hollywood with some of its finest films.
On Monday night Television One viewers can see scenes from some of Selznick’s best: “Gone With The Wind,” “A Tale Of Two Cities,” “David Copperfield,” “King Kong,”
“Anna Karenina,” “A Star Is Born,” “A Farewell To Arms” and “The Paradine Case” (which screens on the same night). Appearances by Ingrid Bergman, Joseph Cotten, Joan Fontaine, Janet Gaynor, Dorothy McGuire and Gregory Peck give viewers a new insight into the legendary movie-maker. The directors Alfred Hitchcock. King Vidor and George Cukor, and the producer Alan Pakula talk about his work, and there is a behind-the-scenes look at the making of films like “Rebecca” and “Gone With The Wind.”
The unbeatable combination of Selznick and Hitch-
cock is responsible for “The Paradine Case.” It contains not only the Hitchcock suspense but
also the kind of rich love story and personal drama for which Selznick films have long been famous.
