Motels report better trade during holidays

Christchurch moteliersl appear to be doing a better! trade over the holiday: period than they did last! year. ’ Several motels, telephoned; at random, yesterday reportjed few or no vacancies at; I their motels. I Last year, motel proprie-i I tors reported a lean time! during December and Janu-I ary, usually their busiest! time of the year. New Brighton motels telephoned yesterday had no vacancies and proprietors had good lists of forward bookings. Mrs D. Avery, the proprietress of the Acme Luxu- ' ry Motel at New Brighton, said that she had had only two vacancies over Christmas but they were caused by last-minute cancellations. Visitors to the motel were mainly South Islanders, she said. Fewer North Islanders had booked into her motel than in previous years, because they needed to book a long time ahead to get a passage in the Cook Strait ferries, she said.

I The Par 3 Lodge at South! 'New Brighton has had full: I accommodation every night! lover Christmas. The proprie-l I tor. Mr B. S. Pester, .-aid [that he had many family! 'groups at his motel. I However, other Christ-! ; church moteliers said that I they had young or middleaged couples, or overseas: I tourists staying. i Mr R. E. Dick. the proprietor of the Northcote Motels, on the Main North Road, said that it was expensive for family groups of four or five to spend a whole week in motels. They tended to go camping or caravanning. The inner-'city motels, although not as full as areas such as New Brighton, tended to cater more for the overseas tourists, especially Australians. One Christchurch motelier said that 70 per cent of his I bookings at present were Australians. Other bigger motels with links to overseas tour organisations were full. The general pattern at most motels telephoned was for people to stay for one or two nights. I Holidaymakers tended to use Christchurch as a transit I place from the south to the I north or on trips round the ; South Island, said one mote- ' I Her. ■
