Andretti trip off

Mario Andretti, the world driving champion, has had to cancel his January trip to New Zealand. Andretti was to have raced speedway saloons at Western Springs, Auckland, and then Woodford Glen. Christchurch, after a two-meeting speedway tour of Australia but problems with the aerodynamic skirts on the new Formula One Lotus 73 car have demanded further testing in January and he is unable to spare the time for the trip.

Andretti’s main aim in 1979 is to retain his world title, and with the first grand prix, in Argentina, set down for late January, Lotus is anxious to have the cars performing perfectly.

The January 7 meeting at Woodford Glen has now been cancelled. It is hoped that Andretti will now come next year, to drive the Monza that is being built for him in Christchurch.
