As 1978 draws to a close, locally grown stone fruit is coming into season.

Apricots and plums are ripening rapidly in Christchurch orchards and will be on sale at roadside stalls this week-end. Orchards at the top of the Horotane Valley have particularly big crops. The recent hot weather has meant apricots and plums are coming into season very quickly, according to growers. Many will have to be picked this week-end, and because the markets will be closed on Monday (New Year’s Day) will have to be sold at the roadside.

Although apricots and plums are coming into season slightly sooner than the previous two years, it is not a particularly early season, growers say. The last two years were exceptions, when there was also a significantly smaller crop than usual.

This year is likely to see an average crop.
