Mining sector leads market
Trading for 1978 closed on a good note on Australian stock exchanges (yesterday), led appropriately by the mining sector. Although London and Wall Street were down overnight, the market followed its own _ourse and made a further gain. Oil and diamond stacks were prominent again with oil being buoyed by the Esso-B.H.P. partnership reporting new oil discoveries in their Bass Strait exploration field. 8.H.P., which has been up and down in the last two weeks, finally closed 2c higher at 898 c, only 4c down on its year high.
All Other oil stocks firmed except for Beach which traded steadily at 64c. Of the Ashton diamond join t-venture partners, Northern Mining and Ashton both firmed, but C.R.A. shed 5c to 360 c. There was little trading of coal stocks, but uranium miners all traded firmer with Pancontinental rising 20c to 980 c, Kathleen 10c to 285 c, and Peko 6c to 566 c. ! On the industrial boards,! trading was generally mixed! although slightly firmer. j Among the banks, C.B.A. I rose 5c to 260 c and the National Bank 2c to 252 c, while IA.N.Z. shed 2c to 408 c. Retailers firmed slightly with David Jones and Woolworths both adding 1c each, and Myers was steady at 175 c. CSR and Pioneer Sugar were both steady while Comalco shed 10c to 265 c.
