Hams accounted for

Because most people ordered their Christmas hams and turkeys in advance, there have been very few “leftovers,” according to Christchurch butchers. Several interviewed said that sales had been exceptionally good and those hams and turkeys which did not sell — mainly because the people who ordered them did not show up — would “easily be sold by the coming week-end.” All confirmed that there had been an unusual demand for mutton hams — perhaps understandably as mutton hams retail about $5 each-

“There is no problem with frozen turkeys,” one big butchery firm manager said. “They’ll last for a long time, and besides, we don’t have that many left.”

It was a different story for Christmas cards and decorations however. A number of stationers found themselves with a surplus after the Christmas season. It was the same with decorations. Many people did not bother with window dressings or traditional Christmas trees this year. “Christmas tree lights, especially, were just too dear,” said one dealer.
