First move today on Daily extradition

NZPA London The British police will make their first move today to have a New Zealand man, lan Daily, aged 38, wanted for abducting his daughter Emelyn, sent back to Britain.

Superintendent Don Gibson. in charge of the case, said yesterday that he would meet the Director of Public Prosecutions — who is responsible for bringing all criminal prosecutions in Britain — today in the hope that extradition proceedings can be started before the end of the week. “But let me make it clear, my first thought is to get the child back to her mother,” he said.

“We also want Daily to stand in a British court of law with his two codefendants.” Dailv and two other men allegedly snatched Emelyn from her mother’s home on December 14. Daily was arrested when he arrived on Christmas Day and is being held in custodv at Auckland. Emelyn is with his parents.

Her mother, Audrey, aged 41, was quoted in the London “Daily Mail” yesterday as saying that if she needed to fly to New Zealand to get Emelyn back, she would do so. A Whangarei lawyer acting for Mrs Daily said ves-! terday in Auckland that'she intended to fight to the end of her resources to get Emelyn returned to Britain. Mr B. Kain, acting for Mrs Daily, said his client had originally indicated that she might not need to come to New Zealand to win back the child but now it appeared that she would have to. “She will certainly be coming if there is any move to stop the child returning to Britain — if she can afford to.

“I know she will find it a considerable struggle. “I’m not sure what means she has.

“But I do know she is very determined." „J an Daily, a former whangarei security guard, is in custody after he was arrested on a provisional warrant when he arrived at Auckland with Emelyn.
