Many drug couriers duped — police
PA Wellington I The police were concerned about the number of persons bringing heroin into New| Zealand without knowing the full extent of their actions, said the police prosecutor, Sergeant W. T.
Jaques, •in the Magistrate’s Court at Wellington yesterday. Wendy Kay Shrimpton, aged 22, a secretary-model, pleaded guilty-, to two charges of making a false declaration under the Immi-
gration Act and bf importing cannabis. Mr W. M. Willis, S.M., remanded her for sentence. In June last, Shrimpton had left New Zealand for Sydney where she had worked at a restaurant and had struck up a casual relationship with a male patron. He had propositioned her to
1 smuggle diamonds and jewellery into New Zealand, Sergeant Jaques said. She had agreed and in 'preparation took another job using a false name. She was given $l5OO in cash and two specially contracted suitcases which she packed with her personal belongings and travelled to New Zealand. During the flight she completed the immigration declaration form, using a false name and address.
Acting on instructions, she booked into a Wellington hotel, vacated her room for two hours, and returned to find replacement suitcases and her clothing scattered about the room.
She packed her possessions into the replacement suitcases and was about to board a flight to Auckland
when she was apprehended by the police.
When searched she was found to be carrying enough cannabis for three cigarettes. A police search of her hotel room with the assistance of a D.S.I.R. expert revealed broken parts of the original suitcases and a quantity of white powder, believed to be heroin, on the carpet.
The police believed the bulk of the heroin to have been imported by the defendant on instructions, but it had not been found, Sergeant Jaques said.
A woman known to the police to be connected with an international drug syndicate was on the same flight from Sydney as the defendant, and likewise was travelling under false particulars.
