National park programmes
A variety of nature-study programmes, for people of all ages, will be held in national parks during the summer holidays.
“In the past these programmes have been very popular with people who have shown a keen interest in learning as much as possible about our national parks,” said Mr N. S. Coad, chairman of the National Parks Authority.
A comprehensive programme has been planned from December 27 in the form of guided walks during the day with rangers giving
talks or showing films or slides in the evenings.
The walks will cater for both experienced trampers and those wanting half-day strolls.
The programmes for the national parks are: Abel Tasman.—December 27 to January 31, guided walks, films and discussions. Nelson Lakes—December 28 to January 18, Tuesdays, Thursdays, and Saturdays, conservation films, slides, and lectures On national parks.
Arthur’s Pass.—December 27 to January 19, walks, evening films, and talks by guest speakers.
Westland.—December 27 to January 16, guided nature walks, full-day hikes, and on Wet days, natural history films at the visitor centre. Mount COok, Fiordland, and Mount Aspiring national parks Will all have walks, slides, and speakers, and fullday field trips have also been planned at Mount Aspiring. The programmes for the latter two parks are December 28 to January’ 25 and for Mount Cook, December 27 to January 31. Further information can be obtained from park board secretaries or from visitor centres at the various parks.
