Sailing win to N.Z.

New Zealand skipper, Chris Dickson, and crew, David Mackay, have won the World 420-class title at the Royal Freshwater Bay Yacht Club in Perth. This win came after their fourteenth place in the Fico Marine medalion race — the final heat in the World Youth sailing championships. i The New Zealanders built up a big lead in the first five heats of the six-heat series to beat Australia by six points.

The Australian skipper, Rodney Beautreaux, and crew, Geoff Backshall, both came from Perth. New Zealand’s Peter Kempkers took third in the Laser world youth championships. The winner was Andrew Men Kart of the United States. Second was Willie Packer, of Perth. Final points were.— Dickson/Mackay 13; Beautreaux/Backshall 19: Sallent/Rigau 22.7; Soares/Penido 33.4; Hunger/Korte 34.4; Thornburrow/Blaauw 42; Di Salle/Vassallo 44: Tagg/ Tillett (England) 68; Norway 70; Denmark 70; Japan 74; and France 81.
