A railway worker is seriously ill in the Christchurch Hospital after he was struck by a shunting engine at the Waltham railway yards yesterday morning. The injured man, James McGill, aged 45, is shown above being treated at the scene by St John ambulancemen and an accident

emergency team doctor. Mr McGill suffered severe hip and leg injuries in the accident, which occurred about 10 a.m. He was struck by the engine on the driver’s “blind side,” according to a Railways Department spokesman. “No-one saw how he managed to get into the

path of the engine,” the spokesman said. “We have a system whereby the shunters can usually see anyone moving about in the yard, but for some reason the driver did not see Mr McGill until the moment of impact.” An inquiry would be held into the accident, he said.
