Woman hurt in fall on to rocks

A Canadian tourist plunged 25 metres on to jagged rocks when a cliff face gave way at Cape Saunders in a remote coastal section of the Otago Peninsula yesterday afternoon.

Caroline Schildwachter lay injured for four hours until rescued by a face rescue team from the Otago Alpine Club. Before being winched up the cliff face she was treated for multiple facial cuts by a doctor and it was believed she had a broken arm.

The accident happened about 5 p.m. while Miss Schildwachter and three companions were sightseeing on the Peninsula. Miss Schildwachter apparently ventured close to the cliff’s edge to get a belter view of a seal colony basking on the rocks below when the bank gave way and sjhe plunged over the side.

A member of the party sprinted to the nearby home of a farmer, Mr Rod McKay, who . telephoned the police at Portobello. An ambulance, two fire engines and 10 members of the Alpine Club went to the scene.
