Migration loss increases

PA Wellington About 3000 more people left New Zealand permanently in the year ending November, 1978, than in the previous year, according to figures just released by the Government Statistician.

The figures show there were 16,544 permanent emigrants in the year ending November, 1977, compared with 19,680 in the year ending November, 1978.

But the number of permanent immigrants has dropped. In the year ending November, 1978, 12,012 permanent immigrants arrived while in the previous

year 13,732 people arrived here to live.

There was a net migration loss of 25,406 to our population for the year ending November 30, 1’978, compared with a net migration loss of 21,438 for the previous year. During the eight months beginning April, 1978, there has been a net migration loss of 21,095 compared with a loss of 17,996 for the corresponding eight months in the previous year.

During November this year there was a net migration gain of 8457 compared with a gain of 8896 in November, 1977, the statement said.
