Situation: A complex trough of low pressure is moving east across the Tasman Sea and is expected to move first across the South Island and then the North Island. It will be accompanied by rain, mainly about and west of the main ranges and will be followed by a cooler, showery south-westerly airstream.

Canterbury: North-easterly winds, fresh at times about the coast; mainly

fine but rain developing about the Alps; warm. Outlook Friday, cool so u t h-westerlies with showers.

Marlborough, Nelson: North or north-west winds, fresh and gusty at times, cloudy, with occasional showers; mild.

Buller, Westland: Fresh north or north-east winds, periods of rain; mild.

Outlook: Showers in all dis tricts.
