Creek polluted by show waste
A Canterbury A. and P. Show tradition is on the way out, if the Christchurch Drainage Board has its way. A Ward Street resident complained that Upper Jacksons Creek was discoloured and had a smell on November 8, and the problem was traced to the Addington Show Grounds, where cattle wash and wash down water was being discharged into the stormwater system. Milk wastes and milk were also being disposed of in the same way. Manure and straw from the cattle pavilion wash
area was discharged to a silt trap associated with the drainage system, but no attempt was made to remove solids from the wash water. Board members will ask the A. and P. Association to do better next year, perhaps by pumping its I wastes to a sanitary ; sewer. “This situation may be of use as a pump manufacturer’s demonstration,” said a staff report. The construction and treatment works committee agreed that something should be done about the problem, which happened each year.
