Fewer child visitors
The abolition of the interisland ferry service has reduced the number of school children visiting the Canterbury Museum, according to the Museum Trust Board. The museum’s acting director, Mr J. C. Wilson, told a board meeting that this was the first year he had not made special provision for North Island children because few now visit the museum. “When the ferry was running, they could sleep on the overnight trip, spend a day
■ here, and return to the; • North Island relatively! I cheaply,” he said. “Now, with the cosi of> i overnight accommodation, the trip has become too ex- ; pensive.” This year, 47,388 children ; in 1585 school classes vis- : ited the museum, slightly ■ less than in 1977. In addition, the museum’s education 1 officers spent 41 half-days assisting teachers in class- , rooms. reaching another i 3000 children.
