Aust, markets steady
Australian sharemarkets closed on a steady note yesterday, in response to firmer overseas markets.
Trading was generally mixed with David Jones, Poseidon, and Westfield, and a handful of base metal stocks drawing most interest.
Retailers were generally Steady in spite of predictions of record trading for Christmas. Elsewhere, oil stocks finally gained impetus in the wake of the oil price rise, with BHP rising 6c to 874 c. Beach aslo rose 6c, Santos
firmed 3c, Woodside 2c and AOG Ic. Gold stocks reacted belatedly to improved gold prices overseas, with Central Norseman jumping 50c to $l3 and Gold Mines of Kalgoorlie rising 5c to 75c. But Bougainville eased 3c and Emporer was steady. Poseidon, enjoying its fifth day of trading since relisting, made further ground after Tuesday’s fall, to close 7c higher at 82c. Coal and uranium miners also firmed, as did a number of base metal miners.
