Dual voting
A few cases of apparent dual voting in the General Election have been uncovered by the returning officer for the West Coast electorate (Mr R. K. Gay). He said yesterday that he had reported these to the police for investigation.
Two cases of apparent dual voting in the Lyttelton electorate have also been referred to the police. The returning officer (Mr J. A. Cross) said that 18 cases of apparent dual voting had been found but 16 of these had since been cleared as clerical errors. In Auckland, a package of 20 special votes was found during cleaning up by the Roskill returning officer on Wednesday, one
day after the deadline for these votes, reports the Press Association.
Included in the pack was one vote for the highly marginal seat of Western Hutt, where Labour is hanging on by 208 votes. The returning officer (Mr H. Rundle) said yesterday that the incident was the result of a mistake by a deputy returning officer who had put the votes inside an envelope marked “declaration for special votes.”
He had spoken to Auckland returning officers for the electorates concerned and they had agreed to accept the votes, even though these were outside the legal set time.
