Christmas calls popular
' Overseas toll calls seem to; be taking the place of! Christmas presents this vear, according to the Auckland chief postmaster, Mr D. R. Froggatt. “People are using the telephone service as a Christmas box to home,” said Mr Froggatt yesterday. Rather than spend their! money on presents people were speaking to their relatives and friends overseas.
Calls lasting more than an hour, and costing up to $2OO were not uncommon, said Mr Froggatt. Parcels and packets posted
(Overseas were “down consid-’ ,‘erably” this year. The Post Office opened bookings on Saturday and bv vesterday 1300 people had reserved Christmas calls to Britain and Europe. Last year 911 calls were booked. Calls to Britain for Christimas Day were fully boked [from 6 a.m. to noon, and 6 p.m. to I a.m. the next day, said Christchurch’s chief postmaster, Mr E. A. G. Grand!.
i Calls to Europe were . booked out from 7 a.m. to [lO a.m. and 6 p.m. to midinight on Christmas Day.
Although Christmas Day bookings were not being accepted for calls to the United States and Australia, there would be some delays, said Mr Gandi. However,! the Post Office was making arrangements to keep these delays to a minimum.
