Need for map grant queried

The outgoing chairman of the Lyttelton Harbour Board (Mr J. A. Brand) yesterday questioned an application for a grant towards the cost of producing a map of Lyttelton which,. he said, was about 25 years out of date. The Historic Places Trust made the application. “The map doesn’t even show Cashin Quay,” Mr Brand said. The board’s finance committee chairman (Mr A. A. Macfarlane) said that he did not think the map would be of much use to the board. “They were to have shown us a draft, but now they appear to have produced the final product,” said the general manager (Mr J. A. McPhail).

“This map belongs to the same era as the timeball station,” said Captain A. R. Champion, “and depicts Lyttelton as it was about 50 to 70 years ago.” He said that the board should assist the trust.

Mr R. G. Gerard asserted that the map was not supposed to be up to date. “If they give us 200 copies to dispose of as we see fit, I am prepared to support a donation,” said Mr P. J. R. Skellerup.

f “I find it very hard to see I what they are trying to > achieve,” Mr Brand said. The board adopted a comf mittee recommendation that - a grant of $lOO be made,

and also approved anotner grant Of $3OO for the Lyttelton Harbour Board Employees’ Social Club’s annual picnic.
