St Columba Church

Sir, — I was shocked to read that the Anglican Hornby community had decided to rebuild the church and hall at an estimated cost of $90,000 of which they the 80 members of the congregation would have to find over $60,000 (“The Press,” December 4). I am shocked because I wonder will this be a church “to the glory of God” or to the “vainglory of man.” Surely in today’s knowledge of the gap between rich and poor even in New Zealand, this money should go towards community facilities. A few years ago I spent a short period in Hornby on a survey and the apparent lack of facilities was evident, while there seemed to be adequate if small worship facilities. I would congratulate the Hornby church community for their pledges, but are thev misplaced? Would not a fair-size community hall with adequate space for worship facilities be better than building a church normally used one day a week. — Yours, etc.,

M. O’NEILL December 5, 1978.
